Ever stopped and read the list of ingredients on products in the grocery store?

If you did, you most likely couldn’t pronounce most of them or even know what they are.

You’d like to know if the product is good or bad for your health, however you wouldn’t sit down, look up every single ingredient, and make a note of which are good or bad. That would take a long time to make the list.

Do you wish there was an app that could scan products and list the ingredients that are good or bad for you?

All you would have to do is open the app, scan the barcode of the product, and the app will say if its good or bad for you and lists the ingredients in the product and say if they are hazardous or not.

Wouldn’t that save you a lot of time from googling one ingredient at a time?

Hell yes it would.

Good news, there’s app that can do just that. It’s called Yuka.

What is Yuka?

Yuka is a free mobile app you can scan the barcodes of food and cosmetic products and see their impacts on your health instantly.

Yuka will show a result page with a rating and detailed information about the scanned item to help you understand it.

However, the app works on food and cosmetic products only. Can’t use it to scan cleaning items

The app rates the products in four categories: Bad, poor, good, and excellent.

Yuka is an independent project. All the product reviews and recommendations for healthier options are done in an objective manner. No brand or manufacturer has the ability to influence reviewers or the results of the products.

The best part, no in-app advertising!

What a relief.

You can download Yuka for the App Store on any Apple device or from the Google Play Store for Android users.

How to use the Yuka app?

Step 1: Open the app. It will take you to your history page.

Now yours will be empty, but it will look like this once you’ve been scanning products for some time.

Step 2: Select the “Scan” button on the bottom of the screen.

Find a product you want to scan. This can be an item you have at home or out at the store. Place the item where the barcode is facing the camera.

You don’t have to take any pictures. The app will scan the item and give you the results.

Step 3: Swipe up on scanned item to get more information.

You’ll see a list of ingredients in the item and rates them whether their no risk, low risk, or high risk. Click on the “i” symbol on the right to get more detail information about the ingredient.

Scroll further down and you’ll see recommendations for healthier alternatives of the item and other options like favoriting the item.

Other app features

On the main screen, you have a tab call “Recommendations” where all the items rated as bad or poor shows alternative items you can buy that are much better.

You can click on an alternative item on the right to show a list of other similar items. Click on one and it will show the list of ingredients and their ratings.

There’s an overview page where you can see a pie chart representing all the scanned items for food and beauty.

Another cool feature is the search feature. You can look up the item you want and see the rating on that item.

A really neat feature that Yuka app has is when you scan an item and it comes up as unknown, you can fill out the information required. Once complete, send the information in and Yuka will analyze it and give you the results back in about 2 hours.

Now, is it worth using?

After using the app for about a few days to a week, it’s has been very handy when it comes time to get groceries.

Its great to have the app and see if what I buy is healthy for me to eat or use on my body. However, I do get a bit bummed out when I scan a product I like and it gets a bad rating.

The Yuka app is worth downloading and using an a daily basis. Really helps you find healthy products for you and your family and live a clean life.
